Luca graduated, with honours, from the University of Bologna (Italy) in 1992. After a 1 year internship at the Department of Animal Science of the University of Padova (Italy), he carried out a 3-year BBSRC research project in endocrinology at Cambridge and was awarded his PhD in 1996. After 3 years as an Assistant Professor at the University of Padova (Italy), first in small animal physiology and then in internal medicine, he moved to the University of Bristol, where he taught cardio-respiratory medicine of the dog and cat for nearly 7 years. He obtained the RCVS certificate in cardiology in 2001 and the ECVIM-CA diploma in cardiology in 2004. In January 2006, Luca was appointed Associate Professor in Cardiology at the University of Minnesota (USA) where he worked for 2 years, before joining the Anderson Sturgess specialist team.
Luca has received several awards and academic recognitions, both for his teaching and research activities. He has contributed to the veterinary literature with more than seventy articles, research communications and book chapters. Luca has also been invited to speak at international meetings and continuing education programs for the veterinary profession. He is currently a European Specialist in Veterinary Cardiology and a member of the ECVIM board of examiners.
Luca’s main interests include feline myocardial disease, interventional cardiology, respiratory medicine, as well as clinical investigation of syncope and exercise intolerance.
Luca is always happy to offer practitioners advice on cardiorespiratory cases, ECG reading and thoracic X-ray interpretation, and welcomes all cases referred to this clinical service. Interventional cardiology (pacemakers, valvuloplasties, PDA occlusions) and an exercise laboratory (investigation of exercise intolerance and collapse) will also be available soon.
