Andy is a 1996 Bristol graduate. He spent five years in first opinion small animal practice before returning to Bristol University in 2001 for a three-year surgical training programme. In 2004, Andy passed the RCVS Diploma in Small Animal Surgery (Orthopaedics) and joined the Royal Veterinary College as a lecturer and orthopaedic clinician. In 2005, Andy became (by examination) a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons. Andy is recognised by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons as a Specialist in Small Animal Orthopaedics. Andy also holds the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP), from King's College London's Institute of Learning & Teaching. He is currently Chairman of the Education Committee of the British Veterinary Orthopaedic Association.
Andy’s clinical interests encompass all aspects of musculoskeletal disease and traumatology, but he has specific interests in canine joint replacement (hip and elbow), arthroscopy (e.g for the diagnosis and management of elbow dysplasia and shoulder disease) and fracture management (including minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis and the use of locking internal fixators). Andy has been invited to lecture, to practitioners and other specialists, on various aspect of small animal orthopaedics in continental Europe, Asia and North America, as well as the UK. He has published widely including peer-reviewed research and review articles on fracture management, elbow dysplasia, incomplete ossification of the humeral condyle, stifle stabilisation for cruciate disease and tendon repair techniques.
In 2005 Andy initiated the canine total elbow replacement service at the RVC, as seen on the BBC1 series SuperVets.
